Faller certification. In B.C., any worker who fells a tree larger than 6 inches in diameter must be certified to the BC Faller Training Standard (BCFTS). A worker who holds a faller certificate is considered to have met the minimum training requirements in the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Regulation for falling in a forestry operation. Faller Training and Certification. In BC, all manual tree fallers in forestry operations must be trained and certified. Falling trees by hand requires highly specialized skills and a commitment to working safely every day.

Fallers need to be aware of physical hazards, the dangers of fatigue and stress, and the exacting requirements of meeting production demands. This course will educate learners about why notches and back cuts work as they do and how the methodology affects the success of accurate tree falling. Participants will have the opportunity to practice notching and back cuts in a practical setting.

The courses are delivered through the University of Northern B.C. (UNBC). Each is a two-day course that includes a mix of classroom and field exercises, and qualifying exams.
